Oheka Castle Reviews

I had seen this place in the movies, and I knew it was super famous, but I could not have prepared myself for just how astonishing it is in person! I mean, you know it’s going to be amazing … but wow. When we got out of the car for our appointment to check it out, well, my jaw just dropped! Took me a full minute to get it shut again I think. I was so giddy that day! I can’t even tell you how exciting it is booking at a place like this. When you do it, you’ll have the same experience. You’ll feel like a fairytale princess having a dream come true! I don’t even know what to say about our wedding, because anything I say is going to fall so tragically short of the glorious reality of it! We rode in on a horse-drawn carriage, just like Cinderella, and we got to get married in the stately lawn, and we danced in the most beautiful ballroom. I’d say “it was like it was straight out of a castle,” but … OMG, IT WAS! There are so many wedding halls that try to imitate that look inside, but there’s nothing like the actual real thing. You feel the difference in every moment. I don’t need to tell you about the reactions of our guests, do I? This place is so incredible that some of our guests seemed as stoked to be there as we were! I mean … a lot of envy all around, lol. Of course everyone I invited was wishing they could have been the one getting married here, but they were just excited to be able to even visit a place like this. Everyone had so much fun. And you know, that was actually half the reward for me! I’m glad of course I got to be the center of attention. Who doesn’t want to be the princess in the fairytale? Lol. But I was also so happy we were able to give the gift of an afternoon at this astonishing place to our family and our friends! It was a great way for us to show everyone in our lives how much they mean to us, and how much we care about them. Best part you can ever imagine. What I wouldn’t give to be able to do it all over again!

I can’t tell you how much time we spent on the fence about doing this. We really, really, really wanted to do it, but it was hard to think past the price tag. You pay more than 10 grand just to reserve the site. A lot of venues don’t even have a fee like that … and then on top of that, you pay like $200 a person, so if you are going to have a lot of guests, it adds up ridiculously fast, and before you know it, you are feeling pretty broke, lol. So we had a lot of tough choices to make if we wanted to get married here. We knew we couldn’t invite like 200 people, we were going to have to make some decisions, or get married somewhere else. But everywhere else we looked at, we were still going to be spending like 20 grand or even 30 grand … and finally my husband looked at me and was like, “Why would we spend that much money just to get married at one of those catering halls which is just like every other catering hall?” I saw his point. When you are already spending an arm and a leg on your wedding, you may as well go whole hog and pay what it takes to get a really unique, beautiful wedding at an unforgettable, classy venue. You are not going to get more unforgettable than Oheka Castle. I mean, it’s a CASTLE. A real one, not some kind of a hall just designed to look like one. It’s got an actual history. It was built a long time ago, and at the time it was designed, it was like the second largest residence in the country or something. There have been parties here since the 1920s. All kinds of celebrities and politicians and other famous people have been here. It’s considered a National Historic Place. The castle has a very European feel to it, and the gardens are especially amazing! We really felt like we’d left the country while we were here. And actually, seen in that light, this is a more affordable place than it seems at first glance. I mean, think for a moment about what it would cost to actually travel to Europe and have your wedding there at a castle. First off, you would probably be paying the same high fees for the venue that you are here, and secondly, you would have to deal with the travel costs for yourself and your guests, assuming any of them could even make it. A wedding in Europe would have been incredible, but this was probably every bit as amazing, and we didn’t have to do anything but jump in the car and drive, and we were able to have a ton of our family and friends come out. So it really was a very sensible choice, and we would never have been happy at one of those other catering halls we looked at. Spend the money. It’s worth it. It’s your special day, and it only comes once. You want to go through the rest of your life remembering it right. We had an incredible time that was just out-of-this-world, and we plan to come here on our anniversary every year to celebrate!

There are no words for this incredible venue, but I will try. If you are looking for a fairytale wedding, you would be making a mistake to go anywhere else. This place is the real deal, a real castle right here on Long Island! You will really step outside of your ordinary lives and be able to immerse yourself in a world where romance is everywhere! But this place is great for more than just weddings—in fact, we weren’t even here for one. We’ve been married for twenty years, and you know how that is. It’s a wonderful thing, marriage, but sometimes I’d catch myself looking back at the beginning of our relationship, so long ago, and missing that romantic spark between us. I didn’t realize it, but my husband had been thinking about the same thing. It took me ages to bring it up, because I didn’t know if he’d feel hurt, but I finally did. And we agreed that romance isn’t something that juts happens, it takes some work. You have to do something special now and again that allows you to rekindle that flame. So what we decided to do was come here to Oheka Castle to celebrate our anniversary! Our actual wedding twenty years ago wasn’t at a place that was anywhere near this grand; we couldn’t have afforded that back then. But this is exactly the kind of place where we would have wanted to get married if we could have afforded it. That in itself made it special, the perfect spot to celebrate our vows. Rooms here are expensive; I believe the most expensive one was more than $1,000 a night. They start out around $400 a night. We actually ended up going with the least expensive option, not because we couldn’t have upgraded, but just because it was actually the one we thought was the prettiest. Plus, it allowed us to stay a couple days longer than we would have if we had gone with one of the suites. Imagine a beautiful four poster bed and a big curtained window looking out over some of the most beautiful gardens you’ve ever seen … old-fashioned decor that makes you feel like you’re in a place outside of time, and the most comfortable down pillows you’ve ever slept on! They have a lot of great activities and amenities too. You can play golf or tennis, head down to the fitness center if you want, or you can get a massage in your room! They even have couples massages—that was a very nice experience! One of the coolest things about this place is the fact that the old-fashioned, European atmosphere extends to every inch of the grounds. It’s not like when you step into your hotel room or the restaurant you suddenly leave that atmosphere behind and step back into 21st-century New York. The fairytale magic pervades the whole place. The restaurant here has that same atmosphere. It’s a beautiful place to sit and dine, and the food is just glorious! That was another good reason to go for the least expensive room actually—it meant we got to run a higher bill at the restaurant! We did not skimp on appetizers. They have some of the most amazing appetizers I’ve ever had! The lobster meatballs are to die for, and the four cheese mac n’cheese is so good! They have incredible salads. And the dinner … I don’t even know what to say! Whoever they have as the chef here is just a genius. I could not get enough of his seafood. The stuffed shrimp with the lobster bisque is as good as it gets. I feel like all I’ve managed to do here is just list a bunch of stuff … when what I really want to say encompasses all of it and is also less tangible. It’s not just the food, the massage, the tennis, the beautiful rooms, the gorgeous gardens that make this place such an incredible one … the whole is more than the sum of the parts, as they say. The whole experience is simply breathtaking. Twenty years together is a long time, and it’s been a lifetime of sorrows, joys, sharing the journey every step of the way. I can’t think of a more special way we could have celebrated our anniversary and all of that time we have spent together. Even though we couldn’t have our fairytale wedding when we were young, we still got the fairytale. This has been a wonderful reminder of that. So no matter where you’re at in your own journey … if you’re looking for a place to tie the knot in an unforgettable way or just to spend a romantic weekend together, do it! I guarantee that you will have the time of your lives.

Believe it or not, we actually put off getting married simply so we could get married here. Seriously, we delayed for like two years, because that’s how long it took to save up the money so that we could afford it. It was a long two years, believe me, because I was so ready to be married, and I just couldn’t wait. But every time I wanted to jump the gun and get married somewhere cheaper, all I had to do was look on the website again and see how gorgeous the castle is. Then I’d look back at whatever venue I was looking at as an alternative and I’d just laugh, because there’s no comparison between this place and any other. Not when you want a truly epic wedding. Not when you want to feel like a princess in a fairytale. Not when you want to be Cinderella. I can’t even describe how glad I am that we waited and saved and planned! We figured, “We only get to do this once, so we’re going to do it right, and we deserve our fairytale wedding.” I was so excited when we finally made our appointment for our tour and got to choose our hotel rooms, ballroom and everything else! I felt so spoiled as they took us through the castle and showed us everything. I couldn’t stop smiling. It already felt like a dream come true. Every time our tour guide turned around to show us something, my husband and I just looked at each other and grinned with excitement. It is SUCH a cool place you will not believe it when you see it!!!! I won’t even attempt to describe it, except to say that you’ll feel like you’re in a movie or like you’ve traveled back in time or overseas to Europe or something. It really takes you out of the mundane and transports you somewhere incredible and imaginative. There are endless walkways and fountains and rolling hills and gardens to explore. Photo ops are everywhere; there isn’t a single spot that doesn’t make a great background. You will have an impossible time believing that you’re on Long Island and that you’re this close to NYC! I’m not even sure how to begin telling about my actual wedding. Suffice it to say, it’s going to be hard to every beat it on the highlight reel. I mean, really, I can’t imagine how any day in my future will ever surpass it, which is kind of a weird thought, but it was that magical. There’s so many things you dream about as a little girl, and then you grow up, and hardly any of them happen, and the ones that do usually don’t happen the way you imagined them. This is one of the only times I can think of where something I dreamed about as a child actually became a reality for me as an adult, and not only that, but it was actually even more magical than the way I’d pictured it. It felt like a day outside of time. It’s everything about this place … the amazing castle and grounds … the wonderful world-class service from every person who works here … there totally unique bridal suite and guest rooms … the outstanding cuisine. You will not regret it, even with the high price tag, and even if like us it means waiting and planning a little bit longer than you’d like to. This is not a cookie-cutter factory-type wedding like so many! It’s your special day, exactly how you want it, with every detail perfected. It was my Disney princess wedding, and I will remember it forever as the most beautiful day imaginable.

Having our wedding here was not up for debate once I found out about the place! Actually, hubby wouldn’t have even thought to argue about it. I am pretty sure he was every bit as thrilled as I was with it! I actually can’t imagine why anyone would choose *not* to get married here. None of the other venues in the area even compare! How can you beat getting married in a *castle*? And on top of that it’s a hotel!!! You can stay here! There are a bunch of luxury rooms, and since they only do one event here at a time, you can book them all and have the entire castle to yourselves to celebrate! How cool is that? They’ve got everything here you can imagine, even a golf course. The golf course, like the hotel, is just there for you and your wedding party. Another really exciting thing about this castle is that it actually is kind of historical. Obviously it’s not an authentic European castle, being in America after all, but it’s not like it’s a modern gimmick either! It was built around a century ago, and apparently it was the second largest private residence in the country when they put it up. Lots of famous people have stayed here, Hollywood stars and the like. Ever see the movie Citizen Kane? They used the castle for some of the filming! The castle is built in the French style, and looks like it came right out of the pages of a fantasy novel. There are elaborate, elegant gardens throughout the property, beautifully cultivated. The hotel rooms are just as exciting as the rest of the property. There’s no moment of disenchantment where you step back into the “real world” when you step into your hotel room. They have all the modern amenities, but the rooms still look like something out of a period film! They are just gorgeous! As far as where your wedding party is hosted, they have literally a ton of different options with different capacities, including a number of outdoor areas which are simply breathtaking. We fell in love with the formal gardens and chose to go between there and one of the ballrooms. The sit-down dinner was an incredible experience, and the music and dancing during the party was so much fun! Getting married here is expensive, but a whole lot was included in the package – the bridal suite, the wedding cake, etc. They don’t hold back on anything, they really go to the max for you. Gary, the owner, was incredible. We could tell he’s an extremely busy guy, and yet he always found time for us. We got married in a castle, and treated like royalty. Everything was breathtaking, and I really did feel like Cinderella here. When it was time to go home, it felt like my coach had just turned back into a pumpkin. It was months ago, and I still look back on it every day and miss the special day we were like a prince and princess. I really really hope I can talk my best friend into doing her wedding here just we can go back! I do think you can come to the restaurant here just to eat dinner too, so maybe we’ll do that for our anniversary. That would be so special!
