Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast Reviews

We tossed around a lot of honeymoon ideas before we decided on a “staycation.” We *wanted* to go somewhere exotic … like the Caribbean or maybe Europe … but it wasn’t in the cards. We’re both just starting out in life, and neither of us has a lot of money saved up. We knew that we would be spending most of it on our wedding, even with our wedding on a budget, so it just wasn’t realistic to leave town, as badly as we wanted to. One of my relatives told me about this bed and breakfast and suggested that we stay here and book out some romantic activities like wine tastings and vineyard tours and some beach stuff. It didn’t sound all that great to me at first, because I really wanted to travel! But she actually had a great ideas as it turned out. This B&B is terrific! You will feel like you’ve gotten away from it all, even though you’re right here at home. It’s in such a quiet, secluded spot, right by the water, and you get the feeling like you’ve traveled to a country resort! We ordered one of the “romance packages” for our room and they brought us up a bottle of red wine and some cheese, crackers and fruit. There were even flowers! Oh, another cool thing about this inn is that each room is unique! Every room has different furniture and décor and a different color scheme. Most of them are pretty comparably priced. There are also some beach houses you can rent, but they were outside of our price range, and would have been better if we were with friends. Since it was just us, we settled on the “Southwest Room,” which had a gorgeous four-poster bed with a red bedspread and beautiful décor! Very romantic. There were beautiful trees outside our window and a lovely view of the grounds. There’s a lot to do here—though it was tempting just to spend a lot of time relaxing in our room (and we did). There are amazing gardens around the inn. We loved walking in them and watching the birds. There were hiking trails nearby that were beautiful and secluded. And of course the beach is there. We did a lot of swimming and sunbathing, and we even went out on a sailboat! Greenport is right nearby. We’d never been there before. It turned out to be an adorable little seaside town! It does NOT feel like your typical Long Island suburb. It really does feel like a quaint little village on the shore. They have marinas, tons of amazing restaurants (we ate at a bunch of great places), galleries, spas, museums and more. There’s an antique carousel, a camera obscure you can walk into with a 360 view, a lighthouse you can tour, an awesome farmer’s market, and more! You are also right next to North Fork vineyards. We did a couple of tastings and had a grand time! It was super fun, and if I didn’t know better, I’d have thought we were in Napa Valley. One more thing that bears serious mention is the breakfast! These folks take “bed and breakfast” very seriously. The breakfast part is incredible! They serve it in this old-fashioned dining area on these super cool vintage plates (might even be antiques, I’m not sure) that are really pretty and decorative. There are flowers everywhere, and they serve up tea, cocoa, cider, and coffee. You can get whatever you want! There’s fresh baked bread, fruit, and a ton of dishes you can try. I got pretty hooked on the Dutch pancakes, which come with a filling. I’d never seen or tried one before! It’s like a giant popover more than a pancake. It was fluffy and buttery and amazing! There was also this awesome pastry that I can hardly describe that had fruits and herbs on it. It’s like stepping back in time with the elegant surroundings and all the antique stuff, and the food is unbelievable. Wouldn’t have thought that we could have such an incredible time so close to home. When you’ve grown up here, it’s easy to assume you’ve seen it all and done it all, but between school and work, you probably don’t get out and see the sights nearly as much as you think you do! This whole experience showed me a side of Long Island I usually miss. It’s astounding how much beautiful country there is right here next to the big city. In hindsight, I’m glad we didn’t “get away from it all” on our honeymoon, because then I don’t know if we ever would’ve realized how much there is to explore right here at home.

We have always really enjoyed the Shelter Bay area, and so we looked for a place on Shelter Bay for our wedding. We discovered this little bed and breakfast and just couldn’t get over how charming and adorable it is! It’s beautiful and old-fashioned and quaint in juts the right way. The inn is actually historic; it was built in the late 19th century, and the innkeeper brought in a collection of antiques which you’d think were simply here when the inn opened. It was very fun learning about the history of the place. Along with the inn itself, there are beautiful grounds and beach houses, so that’s another option if you are staying here overnight. The beaches are private, so no crowds, just you and your guests! There are lots of activities; kayaks, canoes, paddleboarding and all that fun stuff. The gardens at the house are incredible too. The innkeeper has a love for all things English, and it really shows in the landscaping. I got to visit the Cotswolds when I was young, and that was instantly what I thought of here. But of course, with the ocean right here, you get that Long Island atmosphere too. Renting the site was very reasonable; I was surprised. I am pretty sure we received a number of discounts through the wedding event package, and the staff were incredible working with us to coordinate everything we needed. We had a wonderful time celebrating with our guests, and we especially enjoyed the delicious dinner! But the best part for us was actually the extra days we stayed after our guests went home. It was just so romantic, and the beach was pretty much empty a lot of the time (not something you get to enjoy a lot living in such a crowded area of the world). It was just so tranquil, and we had such a nice time walking along the shore and strolling in the gardens. We started to feel like we’d come home, and we actually were dreading having to go back to our real home! Now with all the bustle and craziness of everyday life back, I find myself missing the inn every day. Whether you’re planning a wedding or another event, or just looking for a romantic getaway, you will not find a lovelier bed and breakfast anywhere!

We held a small private gathering here and it was an experience that we will never forget. The dining room is formal, elegant, and will make you feel like you have traveled back in time 200 years ... So will the service, and I mean in that in the best sense. Personable, warm, so very different from what we're used to in this fast-paced world. We stayed a couple of nights in the hotel as well, and our room was incredible. A spectacular, very special place!
