The Lenz Winery Reviews

  March, 2015
I have a friend who just got engaged and will be getting married in June. She asked me for a suggestion for the venue, and the first place I thought of was Lenz. It was where my sister got married, and they only do summer weddings, so the timing would be perfect. I had an amazing time, and the thought of being able to go back for another wedding is really exciting. What is it like out here? Well, it’s very small. So this isn’t a spot if you are planning a bigger wedding. I don’t know if there would be enough space to spread out. For a small to mid-sized party though, it’s really ideal. Especially since it –is- small, which means that you definitely will have the place fully to yourself. The staff also isn’t very big, but that’s good in its own way too, because you get to know everyone, and everybody is really nice and involved. They’re an enthusiastic bunch. It might be that they know their vineyard tends to be a little overshadowed by some of their larger competitors. But it stands as one of the nicest I have been to, and I’ve visited four others. Lenz is special from a wine perspective because all of their wines are estate bottled. If you don’t know what that means, it means that all the grapes that they use come straight from their own vineyard. Wines that are not estate bottled might have local grapes, but they might also use imported grapes. Not all Long Island wines are estate bottled. In fact, a lot of them aren’t! So even though this is a small place, they do everything themselves, and their wine truly is local. They have a beautiful and rustic tasting room which feels like an old barn. Lots of room in there for your guests if you are also thinking of a wedding here (or a tasting party or whatever else). The bottles are beautifully displayed in the racks along the walls. The wines are truly distinctive. I’ve tried several of their white wines, and each of them had a very different bouquet of notes. I was very impressed with that. Outside it’s very lovely too. There is a patio which has vines growing on it, and it’s the perfect spot for photographs. My sister had a number of her wedding photos taken on or from the patio. I think the phrase I would use to describe Lenz winery is “world class.” I could easily imagine being a traveler here from Europe, stopping here to try the wine and stroll around the vineyards, and picture having a great time. I expect that this place is every bit as nice as any European vineyard. The scenery is really wonderful, and since it is not as frequented as some of the other local vineyards, you will have a lot less tourist traffic to deal with if you pop by for a tasting. That feeling of seclusion and tranquility that envelopes you is perfect for a wedding as well. There are a lot of comfortable places you can sit and talk and enjoy the beautiful summer weather and look out at the scenery. If you want some shade, the patio or the garden are perfect. The courteousness of the staff really makes this place what it is. If you want to be treated like you are an honored VIP guest, this is the winery you should visit. Is it the most well-known winery on Long Island? No, but maybe it should be. I’m just glad that they are doing well though, even if they are still something of a secret. And I really hope my friend takes my advice and decides to get married here. My sister loved it, she will love it, and I would be thrilled to go to another reception here.
